Hi, I’m Tish.
I am the author of Ebony, Blood, and Snow and other fairy tale fiction.
I studied fairy tales for years before sharing what I learned in short-form content and video essays about fairy tale films, and began writing my own fairy tale retellings.
Inspired by questions like “What could make Snow White’s mother so vain that she would kill her own daughter to be the most beautiful?” (Answer: The Patriarchy), I wrote a collection of feminist, Patriarchy-smashing stories. Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber is my biggest influence in transgressive fairy tale work. I am currently writing my second short story collection, Darkest Season, inspired by winter folklore.
I learned a lot while publishing my first book. Like, I really enjoy how the creative meets the technical in copyediting. So, now I’m also a freelance copyeditor of fiction.
Fairy tales aren’t my only passion. When I was 12, I fell in love with a camcorder. I started making videos and watching ‘indie’ films. I joined YouTube in 2006 and spent many years trying to be a YouTuber. Years into writing and talking about films through blogs, podcasts, and radio, I began working in film festivals at the Canadian Film Institute. Today, I’m a film programmer at the International Film Festival of Ottawa, where I created and host The Gaze series.
I also enjoy solo travel, long walks in the cemetery, and board games. I live in Ottawa, but dream of being a witch in the woods on the West Coast.
