Delicious Day 2: Christmas Muffins FAIL

Sadly, my second Delicious Day of Christmas is what the kids these days would call a "fail".
The plan was chocolate chip muffins, dyed red and green. I cheated and used a plain muffin mix rather than make them from scratch.

As with most of my recipes, these are about 50% chocolate chips.

And then disaster struck... The tray slipped out of my hand when I was taking it out of the oven, resulting in muffin mush all over my oven door and some on the floor. I didn't get a picture of the full mess because I was a little busy trying to pick them all up, resulting in chocolate covered oven mitts. This is just a few pieces that were left on the oven door.

So, that totally ruined my plan to bring them to work the next day. I gathered them up, and they weren't really dirty (some that fell on the floor were, but my oven door isn't filthy) so I kept my smushed, demented muffins to eat myself.

Ya, okay, call me gross. I'm like the opposite of a germaphobe. A little dirt never hurt me. I just warm them up for a few seconds in the microwave to melt the chocolate and mmm, mmm!

Sorry if this post was disappointing, since it was really a big fail. I hope no other disasters strike my future treats coming up, but you never know. I'm trying some new recipes, so we shall see!

Hey, It's Christmas! (Almost!)

Oh my goodness, less than two weeks til Christmas!
I started getting into Christmas about a month ago by putting up my tree and watching Christmas movies, but being the lazy procrastinator that I am, I still haven't finished decorating my tree, or made the paper snowflakes that I've been wanting to make (and bought silver glitter glue for), or watched even half of my Christmas movies (or blogged the ones that I have watched). Now, I have to cram in as much Christmas as possible into these next two weeks! Decorating, movies, and baking everyday for the 12 Delicious Days of Christmas!!!
My goal from now until Christmas is to watch at least one Christmas movie everyday (and blog about it) and make one treat for the 12 Delicious Days of Christmas everyday (and blog it). Not to mention I still have presents to buy, make and wrap. And I want to spend as much time with Addie + family while they're here!
Goodness, goodness, goodness, this certainly is a busy time of year!
Anyway, the real point of this post is to share this lovely website, Hey, It's Christmas! It's a digital Christmas album for you to listen to this holiday season.
I love it so much, I recorded it (ya, I'm a computer nerd and figured out how to do that) and was going to make it into mp3s so I could add it to my Christmas music in my iTunes and listen to it on my walk to/from work on my iPhone. And then I found this page where you can actually download it properly. Much easier, and now I know the artists.
My favorites are Baby, It's Cold Outside and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. They're all what I think people call "indie" style artists, which makes for unique, mellow Christmas music.
I hope you'll give it a listen and add it to your Christmas playlist. It will help you get into the Christmas spirit!
Merry Christmas!

Delicious Day 1: Christmas Cookie Decorating Class

The first delicious day is actually a recap of the Christmas cookie decorating class Kim and I did last Friday. It was for the same office that we did the cake decorating class for in February. They wanted a lunchtime activity for people. It wasn't so much of a class this time, since we didn't have to teach them much. It was more like we supplied the cookies and the icing and they just had fun decorating. Because, no matter how old you are, decorating cookies will always be fun!

Silly me, I didn't take any photos of the cookie making process, besides these. A heart I made out of cookie crumbs (the dough was so crumbly!) and a random shot of Kim.

I made Adam and Eve gingerbread people. I know it's not Christmassy and makes no sense. One of the Christmas tree candies was randomly placed in the crotch of a gingerbread man and Kim and I were like "It looks like Adam and Eve". You know, with the leaves covering their bits. So, I decided to make these. I did give her some holly in her hair to make it Christmassy. Call it "The Very First Christmas." Ha ha.

And then I made a snowflake. I remember last year I was obsessed with the idea of making pretty white & blue snowflake cookies but never got around to it.

Kim made a lovely Christmas tree. I got photos of everyone's finished cookies. I think this person just wanted to use as many silver balls as possible...

This guy made what you could call the most elaborate gingerbread men (and women). The one on the right with the cane is apparently a pimp and the two girls (made evident by their large candy breasts) are his hos. (Or, as Kim put it, his "Ho ho hos")

A peek at the table of goodies to decorate with.

I spent about $50 at Bulk Barn on Christmas candy for this. (Don't fret, I got paid for doing the class.)

Here are the recipes we used, all from The Joy of Vegan Baking.

We also made glaze, which is just icing sugar with a tiny bit of water, and food coloring, if you wish.

Vintage Christmas Cartoons

When I started looking at all the Christmas movies I was going to watch this year, I thought about some old Christmas cartoons I remember watching as a kid. I decided to finally try and find them. Just my luck, typing in "vintage christmas cartoon" into YouTube found me exactly what I was looking for. I was amazed! I haven't seen these since I was so little that I barely even remembered them.

It's such a strange feeling watching something that you haven't seen since you were a wee child and only vaguely remember. It's exciting to watch because it's almost like deja-vu in the way that you're remembering at the same time as you're experiencing it.

I think you'll enjoy these silly little cartoons (from the 30's & 40's!) and you might even remember them from your childhood! I'm sure my parents weren't the only ones with these ancient short films on a VHS at home.

Christmas Comes But Once a Year

Hector's Hectic Life

The Shanty Where Santy Claus Lives
[I feel I should warn you of two things in this video. One; the song is very catchy and will get stuck in your head. Two; there is some racist/stereotypical portrayals with the toys. Don't be too offended, it was 1933. That stuff wasn't considered racist back then.]

Visual Inspiration: S. Darko

This 'Visual Inspiration' type of post is something I am going to start doing. As you know (or should know), I love movies. I love different movies for different reasons. Many movies I really love for their overall visual look. (Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette immediately comes to mind when I think of visually appealing movies.)

So, without further ado, S. Darko is one of those movies that I love mostly for the visuals. The movie was filmed in beautiful Utah, set in 1995. Visually, it's a mix of mellow, dessert, small town vibes and the dark, creepy, disturbing stuff. I don't want to get into a full movie review, I just want to share visuals.

The very first scene is my favorite. The girls are driving through Utah on a road trip. I always find the first five minutes of this movie so inspiring.

[I just noticed that this is the same font that we used for our Lux Cake Designs logo.]

And then things start to get creepy...

Aside from being visually inspirational, it's a good movie. I won't get into a full review, so I'll just say if you like what you see, I recommend it. (It's a sequel to Donnie Darko, if you couldn't tell.)

Tish's Twelve Delicious Days of Christmas

Okay, everybody. Prepare yourselves. I have twelve deliciously delectable Christmas-themed treats comin' at ya over the next twelve days.

Some will be old favorites that have been Christmasified, and some will be more traditional Christmastime treats. Most will be baking, but I'll throw in some other types of treats for you as well.

I hope you'll all enjoy my treats and try them out for yourselves! Most will be very easy, using ingredients you already have, and they will all be vegan, of course.

The first delicious day is tomorrow! So, get ready to start making some Christmas treats!

Ring-a-Ding

I feel I should preface this post by saying that I do not have a boyfriend, I don't see myself having a boyfriend anytime soon, and even when I eventually get a boyfriend, I probably wouldn't marry him for a long time, if at all.

So, that being said... I want these wedding rings.

I've wanted an engagement ring like this for as long as I can remember. I swear it's just a coincidence that it's the same as Carrie got from Aiden on Sex and the City and my BFF Addie's.
A tiara wedding ring!
And a crown wedding ring for him.
(Okay, I don't love the circles on the tips, but this is the simplest one I could find. I don't want some gaudy, detailed, jeweled ring.)

Sigh... A girl can dream...

I'd heard about her and seen her on fashion blogs and fashion shows, but was reluctant to check out her blog. I finally did, and it's surprisingly cool. I like her strange style and the visual inspiration she puts together.

21 Before 22

aka 21 Things To Do Before I Turn 22
or
21 Things To Do While I'm 21

I got this idea from Elsie's blog last year. I think I was a little too ambitious with my goals last year. Some of them were more like lifetime or within-the-next few-years goals. I was just trying to make steps towards my bigger goals with them. Well, let's see how I did with last year's goals, shall we?
[See my full 20 Before 21 list here. See my Half-Birthday update here.]

20 Before 21

1. Sell art, crafts, clothes, etc. on Etsy
I didn't quite get to the selling part, but I did make quite a few things for my Etsy shop. I am just now really getting down to the details I need to figure out before listing things in my shop. (All that technical stuff like money, shipping, packaging, etc.)

7. Have a website
This wasn't really about actually having a website, it was more about having a reason to have a website. While I don't have a .com, I do have a site and Facebook page for Lux Cake Designs, and someday I'll have a .com.

9. Sell cakes
Check this one off! Kim and I made it official with Lux Cake Designs and are actually selling cakes!

10. Make friends
I think I can call this one a success. I'm friends-ish/friendly with people at work and I reconnected with some old friends recently.

12. Enter every contest/draw
I'm lazy. But I've recently reminded myself of this goal and started entering giveaways on the blogs I read. I mean, really, all I have to do is leave a comment and I could win something!

13. “No rules, no fear.” No excuses!
I don't know if I'll ever get past these. I am so full of excuses for everything. So afraid of everything. It's something I'll probably work on my whole life. Not caring what other people think about me, not making excuses for not doing or doing things.

16. Make music
I started playing the guitar and I recently brought my mom's old keyboard home with me so I can start playing again. I haven't written any songs, or recorded anything. I'm just enjoying making music and re-learning to read music & play the piano again.

18. Get a job
I did this! I got a job at Michaels in July as a cashier and last month I was promoted to Front End Supervisor. Earning money has been great, but as Christmas approaches and the store gets busier and busier, and I get more and more exhausted and more and more sore, I'm thinking about trying to get a job in a cake bakery or somewhere I'm not on my feet all day and isn't so much stress. As a cashier, there are tons of customers who need me all the time and as supervisor, I have cashiers who need me and front end duties to get done on top of customers. It's maybe too much for me.

This year I'm going to include more just-for-fun things that I want to make sure I do this year, as well as achievable small goals; small goals that are a part of/leading towards my bigger life goals. I'm also transferring some of my 20 year old goals that I didn't get to onto my 21 year old goals list. This year is all about growing up, getting motivated and making my dreams come true.
So, let's get to it!

21 Things To Do Before I Turn 22

1. Start and maintain an Etsy shop.
Sadly, I've been saying I'm going to do this for a year. But I seriously will be doing that this year. Seriously. I swear. I'm so close.

2. Go on a road trip.
I just want to get in a car and drive from place to place, with a bit of a plan but also room for spontaneity. It would probably be more fun with a friend or two, but I might just have to try and borrow a car and get out on my own for a few days. [P.S. A road trip is not just driving somewhere a few hours away. A road trip takes several days and many stops for adventures. It's about the journey, not the destination.]

3. Learn French.
Je suis sérieux cette fois. Je veux pouvoir avoir une conversation en Français. J'ai un livre et un CD. Je dois juste commencer á faire les leçons.

4. Write a story.
A script, a short story, a long story, a comic, anything. I want to have an actual, finished project that I can share.

5. Get a job that I love.
I hope to get a new job (probably at a bakery), or it might be that my Etsy shop and/or Lux Cake Designs become major enough to be considered a second/third job for me.

6. Have a theme party.
I love dress-up parties! I've planned many theme parties over the years, but I think the only one I've actually executed was my Alice in Wonderland Tea Party. My friends and I dressed up as the characters, we watched the movie, listened to the music, had tea (aka juice) and scones and cupcakes, and went outside in the cold to play croquet. (I really wish I had photos, damn.) Now that I actually have more than one friend around here to play with, I think this year I will be able to actually have a little theme party!

7. Go skating.
I haven't been skating in a few years. Sad. I was a competitive figure skater when I was a kid. I was really good. Like, really good. But I quit because I was, after all, just a kid and it got to be too competitive and all work and no play. I think I have some crappy skates at my parents house that I could use to go skating this year. And I'm not talking about going to a rink, oh no. Skating is for outside. Kim's family skates on their pond and we can skate on the creek in Kemptville. Or maybe this year we can go on the Rideau Canal. I've lived in the Ottawa area for ten years and never been.

8. Go camping.
I love camping! I went every summer with my family, all over the country. And my BFF Kim loves camping, too. We've been camping together a couple times before, so I don't think she'll need any convincing to plan a camping trip with me this summer.

9. Make a SWEDED! movie.
This was supposed to be Runaway Girls' first new big challenge of our 'relaunch' in September, but no one has made any videos or expressed any interest in the group for a long time, so I think Runaway Girls is pretty much dead. But I still really want to make a SWEDED! movie. Now that I have red hair, I might just have to find a movie with a red-haired star. (The Little Mermaid? Run Lola Run? That Batman movie with Poison Ivy?)

10. Start an interview video series.
I've been thinking about this for a while now. I've been reluctant to start because my camera is ancient (2003) and I feel like if I'm going to go out into the world asking people to do interview videos with me, I should have the goods to back up my mad skillz. But now I'm thinking, don't let waiting to save up enough money for a new camcorder stand in my way of making videos. Someday I will have an awesome camera and make better quality videos, but for now I can still have fun and get experience making videos. (And I may have a shit camera, but I now have Final Cut Express for editing, which should help make them look more pro.)

11. Make a music video.
I'm constantly making up music videos in my head when I listen to music. It's just how my visually-oriented mind works. It's one of my dreams to make a music video for a local band (especially Fire and Neon- love them!), but again I have the issue of my shit camera. But I can still make my own music videos to songs that I love. I've made a lot of all-talk videos in the past, but my true love is just images to music. I'm not good at, like, talking and such, so I suck at creating stories with dialogue, but I would love to create some beautiful scenes to go with some beautiful music.

12. Write in a journal.
I think it's good for me to reflect on my life and my emotions daily. Looking back, I tend to write in a journal most when I'm really depressed. Most of my journals consist of "I hate my life." and lists of how I was going to change my life. Now that I'm not depressed anymore, I want to journal the good stuff. It will also help develop my writing. I might also try a visual type of journaling á la this.

13. Take lots of photos.
It's fun to just have random, bad photos from your adventures. I'm not talking about being that person who is too busy documenting their life to live it. I just think snapping interesting photos with my cool photo apps on my iPhone will make for good blog posts and memories. I mean, lots of photos of people posing, smiling at the camera, isn't really capturing a moment, it's not really what was going on that night, right? The photos that need explanation are the best because you get to relive some crazy moment that you took that awkward photo.

14. Learn to play a song from memory on the piano.
I want to be able to sit down a piano and just play an amazing song from start to finish without reading any music. Preferably Lady Gaga.

15. Collaborate with someone on an art project.
I'm usually pretty insecure about my creative projects and don't like to share until I'm sure I'm finished and it's ready to be presented to the world. However, I would really like to be able to work creatively with another person. I think it would be great to have someone to share ideas with, get ideas from, and just learn from each other as we create something amazing.

16. Sew a dress from scratch.
So far, I've only made clothes from other clothes. It makes it easier to have the basic structure already made and I just have to adjust it. I do have a lot of dress sketches, though that I would love to make. It would be a real challenge for me because I'm bad at precision work that requires measuring and no undo button, but it would be so rewarding to be able to wear a gorgeous dress and say "I made this all by myself from scratch."

17. Move to a new apartment.
As much as I love my colorful little apartment, it does get a bit depressing down here in a basement with just one little window. I need my sunshine. Also, I've been told it's way over-priced and after looking online, I'm pretty sure I could find a cheaper place that actually has windows. And moving means I get to go through all my stuff and get rid of junk and then I get to reorganize everything and decorate a new apartment!

18. Try a new hair color.
I've been dying my hair since I was twelve. It's usually a dark red color, or my natural dark brown. The only bright unnatural color I've had my hair is bright red. (This is my fourth time having it bright red.) Pink is my favorite color, but I've never wanted pink hair because it's just so overdone. And cool colors (blues & greens) usually fade quickly and look gross. I'm thinking maybe adding some purple pieces to my red might look nice, or perhaps I'll try pink hair for a while just for fun. Maybe I'll just go crazy and do a bunch of colors together, who knows! I'm planning on keeping it red for the foreseeable future, so this would just be for a couple weeks or months, just to try something different, and then I'd go back to red.

19. Make a snow fort.
I hate winter and snow for day-to-day life. However, I do love to get all bundled up like a little kid and play in the snow. One year a made a nice big fort in the giant snow pile by my house/parking lot that the snow plow made. It was awesome except I would come outside like a crazy old lady and yell at the neighborhood kids for playing on my snow pile and ruining my fort.

20. Make a tee-pee.
Ever since I saw Elsie's tee-pee, I've wanted to make one. Maybe it will just be a temporary one, or maybe I'll make a nice canvas one to keep forever.

21. Visit a far-away friend.
I have friends all over the country; Montreal, Toronto, Southern Ontario, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria. Sometime this year, I'm going to save up my money to go visit someone and have some fun adventures!

Okay, now it's your turn to make your list. Even if it's no where near your birthday, it's never too late to make a list!

Love Actually

"Love actually is all around."
Love Actually was one of the first ensemble interconnected love stories kind of movies before movies like He's Just Not That Into You and Valentine's Day. There are too many well-known actors to count. I'm sure you'll recognize most of them. This movie is full of all different types of love stories; the love of husbands and wives, families, friends, children. There are happy affairs and sad affairs, true love and puppy love, reciprocated and unrequited love. People of all ages and situations. Some have happy beginnings, happy middles or happy endings. Basically, there are enough stories in here that everyone can relate to one of the situations. This movie takes place around Christmas, but the movie isn't really about Christmas. I think they just made it Christmastime to add to the general love theme of the movie, since we all know Christmas is when people get all sentimental and lovey with each other.I think most girls love this scene the most; when this guy professes his love for his best friend's wife on several poster boards. I'm sure all the girls love it because they wish a boy would do something sweet like that for them, but my favorite part is after he's finished his little presentation and is walking away. He says "That's enough." He had been hiding his feelings for so long, and he finally got to say (or at least have her read) what he wanted to say and now he's done pining for his best friend's girl and ready to move on.

For the most part, this movie has several happy endings, which makes it a cheery love-filled movie for the holidays, or any time of year. It's funny, it's serious, it's sweet, it's a little cheesey, but all-in-all a nice love-filled Christmastime movie.

Elf

"Oh, hello. You're probably here about the story."

I started off my Christmas season with

Elf

, one of my favorite Christmas movies. Actually, one of my favorite movies ever. I'm a big Will Ferrel fan and this is one of his funniest roles. I'm also a big Zooey Deschanel fan, so this movie just has everything I love including laughs, music, and Christmas cheer!

"I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel."

One of the most amazing scenes is when Buddy the Elf decorates the department store. It's amazing. Paper snowflakes and garland everywhere, "Welcome Santa!" written on Lite Brites and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. It always inspires me to start my Christmas decorating, including lots of paper snowflakes!

"Buddy the Elf! What's your favorite color?"

Oh, you better believe I will be answering my phone like that for the Christmas season.

One of the best parts of the movie doesn't come until the end. Zooey Deschanel & Leon Redbone singing Baby, It's Cold Outside over the end credits. It's a beautiful song and their voices together make this a unique version. Have a listen for yourself while you sip some hot choco by the fire and get into the snowy Christmas spirit.

Christmas Movies

The Christmas season is beginning for me. I've put up my tree, I've started watching Christmas movies, and I've started buying Christmas presents. I'll share all of my Christmas adventures with you as they happen, but today I'm talking movies. Christmas movies.

As a cinephile, I watch movies based on the mood I'm in or the mood I want to be in. So, naturally, the best way for me to get into and enjoy the Christmas spirit is to watch Christmas movies!

Here's the list of the movies I already have and plan on watching this Christmas season (and probably well into January if I don't get through them all before Christmas- my Christmas season can last as long as I want it to).

A Christmas Carol (2009)
A Christmas Story
Eight Crazy Nights
Elf
The Family Stone
Four Christmases
Fred Claus
Frosty the Snowman
The Holiday

Home Alone
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Home Alone 3

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
It's a Wonderful Life
The Little Drummer Boy

The Polar Express
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Santa Baby
Santa Claus is Comin' to Town
The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause 2
The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause
Scrooge (1951)

And then I decided to look for more Christmas movies and found a list on Wikipedia, so I went a little crazy adding all these to my list of movies to get which I haven't seen.

Mickey's Christmas Carol
Christmas in Wonderland
Jack Frost
Noel
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Santa's Slay
Shrek the Halls
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas
A Charlie Brown Christmas

ModCloth Love

I came home to a lovely surprise this evening. My ModCloth order had arrived!

I have a thing for birdcages, if you didn't already know. And since I now have a business with business cards, I wanted a pretty business card holder.
[Buy it here]
I fell in love with this a while ago, and when I went to see it again it was out of stock, so I signed up to get emailed when it was back in stock. And then I figured, since I was ordering this, I might as well take a look around and see what else I want, since I'd lusted after some rings on ModCloth...

Meet my new friend, Mr. Octopus.
[Buy it here]
I had seen someone doing this on their blog (sorry, can't remember what blog) and I thought it was cool, so when I saw it on ModCloth, I just had to have it. It's awesome. I'm looking forward to doing some of the cool stuff with it. The point is, each page has instructions of what to do with that page, like write on it, doodle on it, smear something on it, crumple it up, rip it out, etc.
[Buy it here]I'm going to share on my blog what I do with some of the more interesting pages.
