A long time ago, when people looked up into the night sky, all they saw were stars. The Goddess of the Sun brought light to the world during the day, but, try as she might, she could not stay in the sky throughout the night, and she had to leave her beloved world in darkness, with only the tiny stars to watch over them.
A young girl in a travelling tribe named Luna was particularly frustrated with the Sun for leaving her people in darkness every night. Her tribe couldn’t hunt or travel by night, which slowed them down and limited their food. Every day, Luna prayed to the Goddess of the Sun to please stay longer, but the Sun always left them in darkness at night.
One day, Luna was so desperate to help her family survive that she offered herself as a sacrifice to the Goddess of the Sun, if only she would help her family with more light at night. That night, the Goddess of the Sun took Luna from her bed and put her high in the sky where her smiling face would shine every night. Her family lived prosperously and Luna never missed them, for she watched over them every night.

Speaking of moon goddesses- have you seen the animated film Over the Moon? It’s on Netflix, and it is simply delightful. It tells the story of the Chinese moon goddess Chang’e.
