Once upon a time, or maybe yesterday, a woman stood wringing her hands. She was in the garden, where she was meant to be gathering the vegetables for her family’s dinner, but she couldn’t move.
Last week, she did her chores like always; they weren’t difficult and she often enjoyed doing them if she sang to herself while she worked. But for the past few days, her work, though the same as always, seemed very difficult and made her very tired. And today, she couldn’t get anything done. Her mind raced through a million thoughts other than the task at hand. Sometimes it felt like her mind left all together. So now she stood, at the edge of the garden, unable to move. She couldn’t move forward and pick the vegetables, but she couldn’t go back in the house without them.
After a while, her mother called to her from the house, angry that she was taking so long. But she just kept standing there, growing tired, but unable to make herself move. Then, magically, her fairy godmother appeared in the garden. This shocked her out of her stupor and she focused on the beautiful fairy. Her fairy godmother assured her that sometimes everyday things become very difficult, and when they do, it’s time to take a break. Before the woman could protest, the fairy magicked them both to her home in a hollowed out tree trunk and put her goddaughter into a cozy bed with a cup of tea. She said not to worry; her family wouldn’t starve just because she didn’t get the vegetables.
The woman had a good sleep and few days of rest and relaxation with her fairy godmother and when she felt ready to go home and get back to her daily chores, her fairy godmother magicked her back home. From then on, she enjoyed her chores even more, knowing that she had somewhere to go when she needed a break.
